VALLEY SANITARY DISTRICT

In 1996, the Coachella Valley Wild Bird Center took tenancy on 29 acres of district land south of the treatment plant. The Wild Bird Center is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to the rehabilitation of raptors. During the recent master plan process of district facilities, a proposal for a constructed wetland was introduced to benefit the treatment process and provide a public recreational benefit as a bonus.

A constructed wetlands that is integrated into the existing pond systems is a way to achieve regulatory standards for high quality effluent at less cost than other conventional systems. The constructed wetlands "polish" wastewater by a natural biological process of allowing wastewater to flow slowly through plants and open water. Further removal of toxics and chemicals occurs in the wetlands. A new wildlife habitat is created for the education and enjoyment of the public.

In the proposal, the Wild Bird Center would build an interpretive center for the public to be introduced to the entire water reclamation process and bird rehabilitation. The interpretive center would also be a place for hands-on experience with the natural world and the rehabilitation work of the Center.

Two local Indian tribes, the Cabazon Band and Twenty-nine Palms Band, have indicated preliminary interest in the project. The tribal lands that are immediately adjacent to the district would add opportunity for open areas for hiking, nature walks, and interpretive areas for native cultures. Permission from the Coachella Valley Water District to access the storm channel adds to the joint agency venture that is in the planning stage.
